Endowment Funds

What is an Endowment Fund?

An endowment gift to the Minnesota Jewish Community Foundation today provides for our future. Endowment donations are invested, so when you make a donation to an endowment, you give a gift with both immediate and long-term benefits. A portion of the annual income from the investment is used to address immediate needs at MNJCF. The remaining funds are reinvested to ensure indefinite support.

Our staff, Board, and volunteers dedicate thousands of hours to identify, evaluate and respond to the needs in our local and global Jewish community. The result: every gift through the Annual Campaign goes to the highest and best use, every moment of every day.

There is no single donor that has the ability to do as much research, planning, and vetting as the Federation team; a gift through the Annual Campaign is the most responsible choice for your philanthropic dollars.

The quickest way to support Jewish life in Minneapolis, Israel and more than 70 countries around the world is to give a gift to the Annual Campaign. Whether you’ve just had your bar mitzvah or you’re the CEO of an organization – or somewhere in between – you can be a part of something life-changing.

Types of Endowment Funds

Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE)

A Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) allows any woman currently making an annual gift of $5,000 or more to endow her gift in perpetuity. A minimum of $100,000 is necessary to create an endowment in her name, during her lifetime or by putting a bequest in her will, to endow her Minneapolis Jewish Federation Annual Campaign gift in perpetuity.

Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment (PACE)

A PACE may be funded by any of the following: gift of cash, stocks, bonds, property, bequest in a will, beneficiary designation (e.g., to a life insurance policy or IRA), or a charitable remainder trust or charitable gift annuity (the remainder of the trust or annuity can be dedicated to create a PACE). Contributing appreciated assets held at least one year avoids the tax on capital gains.

To determine the estimated amount you need to endow your entire Campaign gift, simply multiply your current annual gift by 20. Alternatively, you may endow a portion of your gift by establishing a PACE fund with a lesser amount perhaps building up the fund through subsequent contributions.

Benefits of an Endowment Fund

  • Endow your gift in perpetuity to the Minneapolis Jewish Federation Annual Campaign, which will carry on your acts of tzedakah and charity.

  • Can be funded by a variety of assets.

  • With your LOJE, you set a powerful example for women today and in the future.

  • All contributions to establish a LOJE are tax deductible. You may receive a charitable income tax deduction if you make a gift to establish a fund during your lifetime. If you make the gift through your estate plan, your estate may receive a charitable estate tax deduction. You may create your PACE through a variety of vehicles, some of which provide your estate with considerable tax benefits without the requirement that you contribute during your lifetime

  • It’s Your Legacy — By giving a planned gift now, you will be included in the Minneapolis Jewish Federation’s Legacy Society.

  • This is not intended to take the place of any part of an annual gift—it is instead a lasting legacy that will continue to make an annual gift to the Campaign in perpetuity on your behalf.

  • How It Works

Jeffrey and Sarah want to give back to their city by putting their money where it will do the most good.

The couple receives a federal income tax charitable deduction for the amount of the gift. They also get the time they need to decide which charities to support. After researching community needs with the foundation’s staff, Jeffrey and Sarah recommend grants for MJF (which they’ve supported for years) and a local animal shelter. The foundation presents the charities with checks from the Jeffrey Fund, which Jeffrey and Sarah named in honor of Jeffrey’s late father. They name JCF as the beneficiary to receive the account balance after their lifetimes.

Jeffrey and Sarah are delighted to start this personal legacy of giving.
